Role of Chiropractic in Treating Dizziness

The problem with dizziness can make us more susceptible to falls and injuries. When we feel unsteady on our feet, it can be difficult to complete everyday tasks such as cooking, cleaning, or even just getting around our own homes. If you are experiencing these symptoms, it is important to seek help from a healthcare professional who can identify the root of the problem and provide treatment. Chiropractors are experts in diagnosing and treating problems with the alignment and function of the spine, and they may be able to help improve your balance and reduce your risk of falls.

This is a particular problem as we get older. One study found that 35% of people suffering from dizziness and vertigo were over 65. This is risky, because as we get older we're also more likely to get injured in falls. So it's important to treat dizziness problems as soon as possible.

The authors of this study examined the type of care that patients received and how effective it was. They found:

  • Only 4.7% of patients visited a chiropractor for assistance, but they had the highest success rate: these individuals, "were very likely to report that it had helped."
  • 84% of patients sought help from a general physician, but the success rate for treatment was the lowest in this group.
  • "For those respondents aged 65 years and older, and for those reporting the cause of their balance and dizziness were trauma or neurological or musculoskeletal issues," the success rate was even higher.

The authors suggest that chiropractic is beneficial as most dizziness and balance problems in older people are caused by neck dysfunction; this is known as cervicogenic dizziness, and is common after an injury or auto collision. Chiropractic helps restore the normal function of the spine after these types of injuries, and can help relieve dizziness and improve balance.

Chiropractic is a safe and effective treatment for dizziness and balance problems in older patients. It doesn't involve the risks associated with medications or surgery.
